This has been a week of stamina.  Just when I thought I had indulged enough, this ‘eatcation’ entered into a new state of bliss.  There is no time to tell you about all the things we ate, frankly if I did you would be shocked.  But I do want to take a minute and share a couple of grand stops we made in this all you can eat tour of Austin.  As I mentioned in my previous post, my sister was in town all week visiting from Virginia, and our goal was to enjoy this awesome city one taco at a time.  However, the week wasn’t all about tacos.  We did go back and visit Tacodeli one more time.  I told you it was my favorite taco place.  And I meant it.  This time we went to the location up north on Burnet right off MoPac.  Just as delicious as we had expected.  I’m serious when I say, eat here.  Again and again.  Anyway, where was I?  Oh right, not all about tacos.  This food fest also became about hot dogs.  I know what you’re thinking……..hot dogs, but I thought you were vegetarian??  You’re right, but there are two little gems here in town who specialize in the all american hot dog and cater to the vegetarian Austinite.  The first place we went to was Frank.  If you are not familiar with this place, check out their site aptly named:  hotdogscoldbeer.com  They are located on 4th & Colorado and claim to be “purveyors of artisan sausage”.  They offer a wide variety of hot dogs and unique sausages that only carnivores can really appreciate.  But they do offer an option to make their dogs veggie.  However, much to my dismay they were out of veggie dogs the day we went.  Not to worry, I threw down with some veggie-chili-cheese fries, and all was right with the world.  They also have root beer on draft which is worth the price of admission right there.  Next time, there will be root beer floats.  My sister indulged in something called the Jackalope, you will have to check that out for yourself.  Something to do with rabbit, antelope and sriracha aioli.

The second hot dog place we visited was Dog Almighty.  Located on S. Lamar just past Manchaca, this place is a true “keep Austin weird” dive.  And not in a bad way.  Not big, not fancy, but they offer a great menu of dogs, burgers, fries, tots and even a hand dipped corn dog.  Which is delicious BTW.  This is the kind of place you eat at and remember what food was like when you were a kid.  The big win for this place to me is that everything on the menu can be made veggie or non-veggie.  Everything.   I ordered the Classic, veggie of course.  Mustard, onions, cheese and home-made veggie chili.  And a side of tater tots.  There are other, more creative named dogs on the menu, like the Pfluger Dog, the Hyde Park Dog, or even the Hippy Hollow Dog.  You guessed it, no bun.  Even if you’re not vegetarian, I recommend that you try the veggie chili.  It has won numerous awards including back to back top pick at the Lonestar Veg. Chili Cook-off (right here in Austin) and 2nd place at the Annual Texas Veg. Chili Cook off.

Ok, that’s enough about hot dogs.  Before I go, I just want to make mention of one more place we hit up this week.  Keep in mind though, I am only giving you the highlights.  We ate and drank as if we were training for a marathon.

Wednesday was my sister’s birthday.  And I don’t bake.  So with no birthday cake in sight we set out to find the perfect place to supplement the sweet.  We came upon the greatest airstream trailer in South Austin, serving up sticky sweet on steroids.                In a word:  GOURDOUGH’S.  In three words:  BIG. FAT. DONUTS.   Understand that this is the recommended caloric intake for a human being for like a week.  But oh man is it ever worth it.  The only problem is choosing which delectable donut to get.  With names like “Coco Loco”, “Son of a Peach”, “Funky Monkey” and “Dirty Berry” the varieties are almost endless.  I mean, seriously, they have a donut with a chicken tender on it.  No kidding, it’s called the “Mother Clucker”.  We ordered three different ones and each sampled one another’s.  The guys who worked there were so sweet, they even surprised us with some birthday candles in one of the donuts.

All and all this one of the best culinary calendar weeks since I can remember.  I hit up some old faves and tried out some new ones.  I lost count of the calories about mid-way through the first day, but that’s ok.  It doesn’t count when you’re on vacation right?  My sister left yesterday back to Virginia.  We had a blast.  But  now we start a new week, and a new month, and I will be spending a lot time with another old friend.  Hello, treadmill.  Its been a while.

My sister is in town this week and we have made it our mission to turn her vacation into a eatcation.  I said, “hey Kristin what do you want for your birthday?”  And her reply was simply, “tacos”.  Well, thats easy.  Here is a little photo documentary of where we have eaten thus far this week.  Keep in mind it is only Wednesday, so we are just getting warmed up!

Barely off the plane and it was off to Austin Java  for breakfast.  Delightful.  This is the baked potato omelet.  We also got the breakfast quesadilla, which didn’t pose for a picture unfortunately.  Both, however were delicious.  Highly recommended.  And being that its Austin after all,  they had some live music for everyone’s enjoyment as well.  Great time. Great Brunch.

This is hands down my favorite place to get tacos.  And now, incidentally,  is also my sister’s favorite place to get tacos.  Tacodeli.  We stopped into to the location over on Spyglass, just outside of the Greenbelt, for lunch.  Walked in starving and walked out with the satisfaction of having eaten the best tacos in Austin.  Being vegetarian, I can’t speak for the entire menu, but I will say that whatever you decide to get here, order at least one of the Heather tacos.  You won’t regret it.  My sister also recommends the Cochinita Pibil.  Which is described as:  Yucatecan style roasted pork marinated and cooked in citrus and achiote.  A unique tropical flavor garnished with pickled purple onions and serranos. mmmmmm.

I know this is not tacos, but please, what eatcation is complete without pizza??   When we got a craving for yummy, homemade, cheesy, foldable NY style pizza, of course we headed down to South Congress to none other than Homeslice Pizza.  The only thing I can say about this is that we ordered a medium pizza and seriously regretted not getting a large.  Man this is awesome pizza.  That’s all there is to it.

So there is a bit of a recap of the first half of Food Fest 2010.  Stay tuned for a part two coming later in the week.  I gotta go take a nap.

I don’t know about you, but in the wake of all this cold, grey and rainy weather, I am jonesing to get out and get some sunshine.  So this past weekend, when Saturday was looking promising on the sunshine front, my business partner and I wanted to come up with something we could do outside.  After a few minutes of brainstorming we decided that we would head down to the hike & bike trail at Lady Bird Lake and see what was going on.  Armed with 8 cases of water and some energetic spirit, we handed out water to thirsty runners and hikers.  It was great.  People were out and about on the first nice day we’ve seen in weeks, walking their dogs, running and biking.  We set up with a red wagon and proceeded to just hand out 400 bottles of water.   At first people were like “really, you guys are just giving out water?  What gives?”  And the answer was, “yeah, enjoy.”   They were all very grateful and so nice.  Many people stopped to chit chat with us, some grabbed the bottles as they ran past as if they were in the homestretch of a marathon.  It was a great experience and a true reflection of what Austin is all about.  We really enjoyed getting out of the office and into the sunshine for a few hours.  We appreciate everyone who stopped and said hi, and if you grabbed a water from us hopefully you will find your way here to my site………..yeah each bottle was adorned with a label that had our logo and web site on it.  (a little self-promotion never hurt anyone, right??)  ;)   Enjoy and come back often.  We hope to get back to the trails and do it again soon!

So for those of you who might be “wait to the last minute to plan something for Valentine’s Day” people, I wanted to offer a few suggestions.  The suggestions might also be worth reading for the “I want to spend as little money as possible” people.  As it happens, I fall into both.  Anyway.  Valentines Day is Sunday, yep, this Sunday.  And I, like most people, think this is a commercialized over hyped, ridiculous, just trying to make people buy stuff holiday.  So I always like to focus on how you can celebrate, or at least acknowledge the day with your loved one with something different.  Don’t buy a card and flowers, seriously. Don’t. We live in the coolest city with the coolest things right at our fingertips.  You’ve probably done many of these things, but maybe you haven’t done them lately and maybe you can jazz them up with romance in your own way.  Many of these cost little to nothing.  Some of these things are outdoors so it is worth noting that weather.com says Austin will be mostly sunny with highs around 55.  So if you can handle that, great.  Here’s some valentines day suggestions:

  1. Most people will take their valentine out to dinner at a fancy restaurant.  This can get pretty pricey.  If you want to share the atmosphere but not the meal, consider taking her out to a restaurant, that might be too expensive for dinner, and simply get dessert.  You will spend a lot less, and still be able to enjoy the romance and ambiance of a nice, high dollar place.  Might I suggest: The Driskill, or Jefffery’s or perhaps, Hudson’s on the Bend.
  2. If fancy is not your thing, perhaps you and your sweetie would prefer a meal that came from a restaurant on wheels?  Well, head on down to South Austin and share a couple of tacos from Torcy’s or Izzoz.  Or hit up Crepes Mille on S. Congress for something different.  Follow that up with a romantic walk through SoCo with a cone from Amy’s Ice Cream or a cupcake from, you got it, Hey Cupcake
  3. Take in the views.  Grab your honey and find a nice romantic spot high atop Mt. Bonnell.  Or take the short hike up to the 360 overlook above the Pennybacker Bridge .  Either way its gorgeous and you might find the right moment to sneak in a kiss or two.
  4. Head on over the Alamo Village location and take in a show.  Might I suggest Valentine’s Day, starring like, everyone in Hollywood.  Come on, you know you want to see it.  Seems only appropriate to do on this day.
  5. If flowers are more her thing, perhaps a visit to Zilker Park’s Botanical Gardens is the ticket.  The weather will be brisk but not too cold for a walk, hand in hand, through the gardens.  If you want to stop by the day before, they are having a rose workshop on the 13th.
  6. Also, if you are looking for something to do the day before V-day, Austin Farmers’ Market is having a very cool Valentine’s Day Treat.  Complete with a bistro chef serving up some yummies from a local farm menu.  There will be plenty of sweet treats on hand like pies, chocolates, cookies, cakes and of course, wine.  Again that will be Saturday, February 13 2010, 9:00am - 1:00pm.
Whatever you decide to do for this Hallmark holiday, remember to keep it simple and keep it local.  Because I truly do believe it’s not about how much money you spend, it really is the thought that counts.

There are tons of super bowl watch parties happening in and around Austin on Sunday, but in my opinion, the coolest place to watch the game is the same cool place you go to watch movies………thats right……….THE ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE.  The Ritz Location is having a free watch party on Sunday 5:30pm.

THE REALLY BIG GAME XLIV

We here in Austin got our Football I.V. yanked from our forearm prematurely with the early shoulder injury of Longhorn wonderboy Colt McCoy in the BCS National Championship, leaving us with a bad case of the shakes. It was a great game, but it didn’t quite give us that full dose to get us through the next 8 college ball-less months. So we did what any self-respecting Football addict would do…turn to the NFL for a quick fix.

Sorry, Longhorns, but this is freakin’ FOOTBALL- the hits are brutal, the passing game can be downright miraculous and the fumbles are few and far between. It’s the real mother-f#@king deal, and there’s only one more game all season and it also happens to be the biggest. (Pro Bowl doesn’t count!)

And this year, for the first time EVER, our friends and neighbors to the East, the New Orleans Saints, get in on the action, taking on Peyton Manning and his Merry Band of mighty skull-crushers, the Indianapolis Colts.

This one is going to RAGE. So turn on, tune in and DEMAND BLOOD.

This show is free, but you may reserve your seat online by purchasing a $5 food and beverage voucher good during the game for food and beverage within the theater.
Kid Policy: 18 and up; Children 6 and up will be allowed only with a parent or guardian. No children under the age of 6 will be allowed.

This winter has taken on the challenge of wiping the drought conditions in Austin from our memories.  It was just last summer that the lake levels were at historic lows and we couldn’t remember the last “good rain” we got.  Today’s forecast is 100% rain………and it seems that we have been making up for last year’s rain deficit.  So are the lakes seeing the result?  The LCRA reports lake levels and flood conditions and here is where we are right now:

Lake Time Head Elevation
Buchanan Feb 3 2010 11:15AM 1001.38  (59% full)
Inks Feb 3 2010 11:15AM 887.41
LBJ Feb 3 2010 11:15AM 824.60
Marble Falls Feb 3 2010 11:15AM 736.56
Travis Feb 3 2010 11:15AM 664.21  (75% full)
Austin Feb 3 2010 11:15AM 492.17

It seems that the levels are rising and thats good news.  According to LCRA, Lake Buchanan is at 1,001.38 feet above sea level which is about 10.8 feet below its historic February average and Lake Travis is currently at 664.21 ft, which is about 6.6 feet below its historic February average.  All and all, that puts the  total combined storage in the Highland Lakes two water storage reservoirs at about 68% capacity.

Stream flow into the Colorado River remains elevated from rain showers last week and from the additional rain fall occurring today.  These elevated flow rates will continue to boost the levels of Lake Buchanan and Lake Travis today and over the next several days.

So if you’re like me and you’re getting a bit tired of the rainy weather, just keep reminding yourself that it’s all an investment.  If we can deal with the rain now, we will reap the rewards this summer when lake levels are higher and we can actually get a boat in the water!

I found this to be an interesting, yet not too surprising list.  As an investor, this is a great list of places to pick up some properties at below market value.

Nationwide, only 87 markets are in the overvalued category, according to a newly released 2010 report compiled by IHS Global Insight and PNC Financial Services.

That means 242 of the 299 largest U.S. housing markets are selling for prices that even bankers think are less than fair market value. The judgment is based on a comparison of median home prices, local interest rates, population densities, and income, plus historic premiums or discounts. (Source: CNNMoney, Les Christie – 01/27/2010)

Here are the 10 most undervalued areas, according to the study:

  1. Las Vegas, -41.4 percent
  2. Vero Beach, Fla., -39.8 percent
  3. Merced, Calif., -37.7 percent
  4. Cape Coral, Fla., -36.8 percent
  5. Houma, La., -34.6 percent
  6. Port St. Lucie, Fla., -33.3 percent
  7. Warren, Mich., -32.3 percent
  8. Vallejo, Calif., -31.9 percent
  9. Modesto, Calif. -31.8 percent
  10. Stockton, Calif., -31.8 percent
